auDA removing 6 month rule!

In June 2008 auDA removed the prohibition on selling domains names, or effectively performing a change of registrant, and created the Transfers (Change of Registrant) Policy (2008-08).

This was a great, and long overdue, step towards creating a legitimate domain name aftermarket whereby domain investors could buy and sell domains for any reason, albeit with a few provisions, such as prohibiting the sale of a domain name within 6 months of registering.

As a result of the findings from a Secondary Market Working Group who discussed many aspects of the .AU secondary market recently, auDA has agreed that “The six month prohibition on registrant transfers should be removed.”.

This is another great step towards building our domain industry, and further shows the modernisation that is occurring at auDA. Please note – this policy has not yet changed – and we will update you as soon as it does!

Be careful what you wish for. The six month wait has the effect of making domains at auction cheaper because money can’t be turned over quickly. ie speculators capital is tied up for half a year. This is a good thing if you are serious and patient buyer and don’t want to pay too much. As you can see from the auction results there are not many premium domains coming through and there is no short of people pushing the price up already.

Cant agree with you thinking Doug on this one.

No other product or service has such a crazy "6 month before you can sell it" rule. Imagine buying a house, car or anything else and being told you cant sell it for 6 months.. we dont live in a communist country and it’s about time that rule was deleted.

No other country in the world has or has ever had such a rule for domain names. Auda got it wrong with their old policies and finally they have realised and are changing the policy in many areas to be like the rest of the world

good work Auda…Long overdue. next thing that needs deleting is the need for people to monetise etc. people should be able to buy and sell when they want and build or monetise or park if they want.

.com has the best and easiest rules.. auda has been years behind with too much red tape for too long and its hurt the internet in australia. Finally things are changing at Auda and with the outdated policies
